The project

At the Sazerac House in New Orleans, the touch surfaces are part of the exhibit furniture. Each angled touch table sits on a pedestal of warm wood and engraved brass, carrying the names of the brands whose stories visitors can explore.

The angled tops put the screen at a comfortable reading height, and the pedestals match the materials of the galleries around them, so the technology feels like part of the museum's craft rather than equipment added to it.

Sophisticated Spirits

At the heart of the museum is a traditional New Orleans bar with a touch table built into the bar top. Visitors take a seat, choose a cocktail on the counter, and a life-size virtual bartender on the screen above mixes it, shares the story behind it and walks through the technique. Four themed bars, from the Apothecary to the Vieux Carré, each have their own drinks and bartenders.

The experience, designed by Gallagher & Associates, won a 2020 MUSE Platinum Award for experiential and immersive design.

Crafting Rum

In the rum gallery, a multi-display touch wall is framed into reclaimed wood shelving beneath stacked rum barrels. Visitors tap through each step of how rum is made, from sugarcane to barrel, steps away from the working distillery visible through the glass.
